Outdoor weddings whether
it be in a garden or on a beach, is a great ceremony option. However,
although it is a great wedding idea, it is hard to pull off. Why?
Because you have to think of the weather, the view, the surroundings,
and other elements that could be the cause of distractions for your
ceremony.
To have a great outdoor wedding, you first have to take into consideration the date of your wedding. Will it be in the summer, spring, or autumn (I don’t think there is anyone in NZ who would consider an outdoor ceremony in winter)? Of course if you are going to have your wedding outside, you wouldn't want your guests to suffer from heat stroke or be soaked in the rain right? Whenever you chose to get married outdoors it is imperative that there is a wet weather option, as you can never predict when it may rain.
If it is too sunny (no natural shade) you may opt to have an open tent, one that has roofing but no sides. That way the beauty of the environment may still be enjoyed. At the very least provide umbrellas or parasols for the bridal party and guests (these can be hired)
Also make sure that water is accessible for your guests on a sunny day. Wind is another foe during weddings. Better skip lighting the unity candle if you are going to have your wedding outside cause it would definitely be out in just a minute.
Aside from the weather,
another concern for outdoor weddings is bugs and flying insects,
especially if you are near a pond or lake. Consider having bug
zappers or electric insect repellents, citronella candles and insect
repellent for you and your guests.
Also think about a floor plan for the wedding. To set up your outdoor wedding first you have to make an altar where you, the celebrant and the bridal party would stand. An archway is often used as a backdrop for the alter. Then the chairs for the guests could be lined up facing the front in a horizontal row by row manner. The back of the chairs could be decorated with ribbons or flowers as well. It is not essential to have chairs for all the guests (as long as your ceremony is not going to be too long), but definitely have a few for older guests.
Also, if you are getting married in a public area (a beach or park) there is no guarantee that you will have the place to yourselves. It may be a good idea to stake out the area early on in the morning to be sure that someone does not go and set up the family picnic in your chosen spot! If you are using a public space you will need to get permission from the local council.
Another thing to consider in planning an outdoor wedding would be the sound system. Amplifiers are needed because the guests might not hear the celebrant speaking or the music. If you are arranging music and a PA system, you will need to ensure there is power to run these – battery operated sound systems can be hired.
If you are on a beach make sure that your guests know to bring a pair of Jandles – high heels in sand is practically impossible and sand can often get scorching hot and burn bare feet.
Last but not least, make sure that there are loos nearby in case the bride needs a touch up or the guests need to go. If you are able to take all of these into consideration then you can be having yourself a great outdoor wedding.
